Cythereus, Poeta Dithyrambicus, floruit Olympiade 95. qui cum Dionysii pellicem Galateam deperiret, tum rivalem in Lapidicinas amovit tyrannus. Illinc Philoxenus aufugiens carmen edidit, in quo fingit Dionysium cum Galatea pecudes pascere et inter pascendum citharam pulsare. Dionysium autem Cyclopem vocat, non solum quod in amanda Galatea cum Cyclope conveniret Homerico, sed et eum ridet, quod visu esset hebetiore. Vide infra, Philoxenus, Poeta lyr.

Cytherius, poeta Lyricus, scripsit Lyricô carmine Aeacidarum genealogiam. Hic, cum aliquando apud Dionysium tyrannum ageret, tragoediasque eius, in quibus ille ambitiosissimus erat, minime laudaret, coniectus est in Latomias; Inde extractus post aliquod tempus, cum iterum iuberetur poema eius approbare; totum perlegi audiit; quô factô prompte surgens, ad Latomias rursus, respondit, indeque Tarentum aufugit. Dionysio vero eum pr literas revocare conanti, respondit hoc tantum monosyllabon, Non, saepius iteratum. Suidas. A Philoxeno Cytherio dithyrambos esse inventos, putavit, putavit Pindari Scholiastes. Sed hâc parte magis sidem meretur Herodotus, in Clio. Is Arionem Lesbium sive Methymnaeum, fabulâ de vectore Delphino nobilem, primum fuisse ait, qui Corinthi docuerit dithyrambos. Atque idem etiam proditum ab Aristotele, ut testis est Proclus, Chrestomathiâ. Sane Philoxenus hic multo post Herodotum vixit; nempe Platonis temporibus. Nam et is Syracusanorum tyranno Dionysio iuniori familiaris fuit, ut Pausanias, in Atticis, ait.
